Hello and Welcome to

Orchard Farm

Orchard Farm started in 2022 with new entrant farmers, Joe, Jess and their daughter, Winnie.

The Farm is situated on the South Devon Coast at the mouth of the River Erme Estuary, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest set within the South Devon National Landscape. Orchard Farm covers 34 acres of predominantly pastureland that is managed regeneratively to improve biodiversity across a range of habitats, while also producing wool and meat from a much loved flock of Coloured Ryeland, Poll Dorset and Dutch Spotted Sheep.

As a farm we are committed to learning and we welcome the public onto the farm for our farm tours and special visits, as well as being CEVAS accredited so we can host school groups and Home Education Groups to come and earn about Farming and the Environment.

Nature Recovery

Meadows

Orchard Farm has three acres of wildflower meadows with species including Yellow Rattle, Autumn Hawkbit, Catsear, Knapweed, Bee Orchids and Pyramidal Orchids with more emerging year on year.

Wood Pastures

Our woodpastures combine open grassland with scattered trees, creating a diverse habitat where livestock and wildlife thrive together. These spaces offer vital corridors for birds, small mammals, and insects while providing natural shelter and nutritious browse for our sheep.

Wetland

A single, shallow stretch of straightened stream has now started to evolve with the installation of fourteen new leaky wooden dams and five new ponds.

Orchard

True to our name, Orchard Farm, we have planted orchards right across the farm. Our orchards now total 250 mixed fruit trees over 7 different orchard blocks.

Wildlife Crops

In addition to our permanent pastures and herbal leys we also plant crops specifically for wildlife. The tussocks are the homes of Field Voles, Harvest Mice and Dormice that weave their nests in different patterns and sizes. The mice are a pivotal food source for our Tawny Owls, Barn Owls, Little Owls, Kestrels and Buzzards that hunt up and down our fields day and night.

Herbal Leys and Permanent Pastures

We cut grass in the summer to provide bales that can be stored as winter feed for our sheep. By allowing the fields to get very long in preparation for cutting hay, many plants have an opportunity to flower and set seed.
